Spring 2019 visit
Corin returned in early May from his ten-week visit to Nepal. During that time, he supported the schools’ IT and computing training and further developed the schools’ administration software package he has written; he also had opportunity to meet with education officers in the district.
Teacher Training in IT and Computing
Training took place over two weeks at the end of the school year, based at Melamchi Ghyang School. Head teachers, computer studies teachers and other teachers attended from 20 local schools around the region for the residential courses.
In total 40 teachers attended and were split into different groups depending on their existing skill level, agreed in advance with the Municipality:
All the courses were delivered by Nepali trainers: three are IT Officers in their Municipality and the fourth was a degree qualified teacher from the School.
November 2018 Visit
Corin flew out early in November to Nepal visiting Kathmandu, Kiul and Melamchi Ghyang. The task was to plan for more computer training in the district of Helambu in Spring 2019.
Headteacher, Purna Gautam was, as always, very supportive. He organised a meeting with the chair of the Helambu Rural Municipality who suggested I contact the IT officer for the Helambu district. At a meeting at Kiul, en-route to Melamchi Ghyang, we reviewed the material and made some revisions and received the official ‘go ahead’ for the training.
Subsequently, at a meeting of local head teachers the groups for training was agreed:
Group A – Training headteachers (IT illiterate)
Group B – One teacher from each of the 34 Helambu schools
Group C – Further training for existing Computer Studies teachers in Helambu
Group D – Training headteachers (IT literate) to use the school administration software package we've developed
We are pleased that the training plan is being shaped by local headteachers to meet local needs and in the Spring 2019 we plan to deliver the training.

New IT Teacher
Ms Jyoti Khadka was appointed as the new IT teacher at Melamchi Ghyang School in 2018 and she is much appreciated.
All the computers are working very well and in regular use.
Update from the village
With the road to the school open, 19 classrooms are being built. A new earthquake-proof girls' hostels is complete but funding for the boys' hostel is a problem and conditions are basic. The dining room which feeds residential children and teachers is presently being rebuilt.
The village is a mixture of earthquake-proof new houses and some tin-sheet and wood 'temporary' homes yet to be replaced.
NEW ECO-FRIENDLY HOTEL
This is an excellent trekking base with stunning views, excellent food and hot showers, en-suite. If you are thinking of visiting Nepal it is strongly recommended!

Your support is making it possible not only to strengthen the IT facilities in Melamchi Ghyang but also to begin to spread the benefits out to other schools in the district.
The village of Melamchi Ghyang, where Corin is based during his time in Nepal, was completely destroyed in the earthquake in April 2015; all the buildings: homes, health centre and school fell down. However, by early June the villagers and teachers had constructed temporary classrooms from the materials reclaimed from ruined buildings - and classes recommenced. There is still intermittent electricity supply to the village and inconsistent internet access for the school. During 2017 building work began on new student hostels work done by CAN, school classrooms are being rebuilt by Caritas. All buildings will be earthquake proof.
