Corin Hardcastle first visited Melamchi Ghyang village and school for six months over winter-spring 2012-13. During that first visit he set up a computer teaching room in the school, wiring sockets and installing second-hand laptops and begain to train students and teachers in computing and IT skills. He has since visited another seven times, for a total of fifteen months to further develop the work which now focusses on training teachers and head teachers in the disctrict in using computers and IT in education. We have also been able to fund the provision of new laptops for the school and teachers.
Following the devastating earthquake of 2015, when Corin was in the village, Yolmo Connect have re-commenced support and delivery of training in IT and computer skills for teachers, from schools across the district, and have witnessed the school and village being rebuilt with earthquake proof buildings. Delivery of training is through skilled Nepali IT teachers and is based at Melamchi Ghyang School made possible through the support of head teacher Purna Gautam and donations from UK supporters. We have also provided bespoke software for school administration which is presently being beta tested with online support being provided.
During the Covid19 pandemic the school has continued to support students through online teaching, one of only 20 schools in Nepal.
Our aims as a charity continue to be focussed on supporting the integration of IT teaching into the curriulum and administration of schools in the Yolmo Valley area of Nepal. We are fundraising to support the salary of the IT teacher in Melamchi Ghyang and training for school teachers and headteachers across the Yolmo valley.
