Big thanks to the British Army Gurkha regiment for sending two of their men in a landrover to collect Corin from Melamchi Ghyang yesterday and drive him down to Kathmandu. It was a long day for them, 15 hours in total on very difficult roads. Setting out mid afternoon Corin first had to walk with his bags one and a half hours down to Nakote village, with the help of a porter, as the road had been blocked to prevent access into that village.
He is now waiting in Kathmandu for news of flights back to the UK, hopefully later this week. We'll also be updating in due course on the work and support the charity has been able to contribute to Melamchi Ghyang School during this visit, despite it being cut short due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Sadly arrangements are being made for Corin to return to the UK ahead of his planned date due to the COVID-19 outbreak, now worldwide. At the time of posting Nepal has gone into total lockdown and the UK government have advised all their citizens overseas to make their way back to the UK. While he waits for further information regarding transport arrangements Corin has been working on the schools administration software in the mornings and in the afternoons helping head teacher Purna Gautum and others from the village construct the framework for a new greenhouse.
Corin has arrived in Nepal and is staying in Kathmandu before travelling up to the village of Melamchi Ghyang, at the start of the next training visit.
Thank you to Kami Yolmo and his son Ishi for their welcoming hospitality in Kathmandu. We've enjoyed seeing the beautiful photos of Melamchi Ghyang village in the snow and thankful to know that most of the villagers now have new earthquake proof houses.
In December 2019 the school celebrated the handover of the class rooms funded and constructed by CARITAS Switzerland. A new earthquake-proof girls' hostels has also been completed but funding for the boys' hostel is a problem and conditions are still basic. The dining room which feeds residential children and teachers has also been rebuilt with the support of Belgian charity Ketaketi.
We're announcing our fundraising adventure for 2020.
Join us sailing the spectacular and beautiful coastal waters of Britain and help to raise money to support education in Nepal. Between May and July 2020 Corin and Andrew will sail ‘Moelwyn’, a 34’ yacht, right round the coast of Britain. It’s going to be a challenging trip and will test their endurance but their motivation and aim is to raise funds for the charity Yolmo Connect. You can take the opportunity to join this exciting adventure as the 1,800 mile trip has been split into seven legs. Lasting from between seven to 14 days duration each leg offers an exciting adventure for joining crew. Find out more on the Round Britain for Nepal page Work has commenced to construct an earthquake proof bridge over the river. The bridge was often was swept away during monsoon season creating significant supply problems for the village. It is now being rebuilt in concrete and steel by the Helambu Rural Municipality.
